Early Stage Planning

Location Factors

You should be deciding on your location on the basis of what is commercially sound for your business. Factors affecting your decision could include:

  • Access to your customers.
  • Distribution networks (e.g. road/rail links).
  • Security.
  • Regulatory requirements.
  • Availability.
  • Quality of workforce.
  • Affordability.

Working from home is a common choice at the beginning for a lot of people. However, you may feel that you would benefit from being in premises that are occupied by other small businesses and/or have shared administration facilities and/or specialised support, such as managed workspace or business incubators. There may be also tax implications to consider.

Be wary about taking your initial decision to locate based solely on places where incentives to locate are greatest. Location should fit into your plans, not the other way around.
